Literacy Coaching

Literacy
(Reading & Writing)

Our literacy coaches have extensive training in the Fundations and Wilson Reading Systems, evidence-based curriculums based on the Science of Reading.

All coaching sessions incorporate word study (phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, high frequency word recognition), handwriting and spelling (letter formation and automaticity, spelling, punctuation), and application (fluency with connected text).

Assessment

The initial literacy coaching appointment will include an assessment of current phonemic awareness, high frequency word recognition, letter formation, and spelling. This assessment is for the purposes of determining which literacy curriculum to offer and the appropriate starting point within the curriculum. This assessment is not sufficient for the diagnosis of a learning disability.

Although a diagnosis of a learning disability in reading or writing is not required prior to receiving literacy coaching, a diagnosis is often beneficial in order to gain access to services through a student’s school.

Individual/Private Sessions

Literacy Coaches provide the Wilson Reading System, an evidence-based structured literacy program that applies the principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach for students in Grades 2 and above who are suspected of, or who have, a diagnosed learning disability in reading and/or writing. One-to-one sessions are provided twice weekly.

For younger children, Literacy Coaches provide the Fundations curriculum, an evidence-based structure literacy program, which is available for children in JK through Grade 3. This curriculum is ideal for children who are not progressing as expected, who tend to progress faster when provided with personalized one-to-one instruction, or those seeking an enrichment experience.

March Break and Summer Camps

March Break Camp

Literacy Camp

Our march break program provides an intensive one-week literacy curriculum comprised of the Fundations Ready to Rise Literacy Program created by Wilson. Components of the program include word study (phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, high frequency word recognition), handwriting and spelling (letter formation and automaticity, spelling, punctuation), and application (fluency with connected text). A minimum of 150 minutes of direct literacy instruction is provided daily. The camp is offered in a small group setting with a student ratio of no more than 1:6 during instructional times. Smaller groups come together for themed play sessions offered between the academic blocks (e.g., making slime, crafting, games, science experiments, building, etc.).

Eligibility

This camp is designed for students currently in Grades SK to 3. Students are separated into small groups based on their literacy abilities during literacy instruction times.

Our Coaches and Instructors

Camp program fees include supervision by coaches and instructors who are certified in Standard First Aid and CPR, and who have a police check.

Literacy coaches have completed formal Wilson Language Training and will be providing the Fundations Ready to Rise Curriculum.  The literacy coaches will be supported in leading the recreational activities offered between literacy instruction times by instructors who include teachers and ECEs.

Day-to-day operations of the camp are supervised by a teacher and a clinical psychologist each registered in the province of Ontario.
