Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is an evidence-based treatment for individuals who struggle with intense emotions. Although it was initially designed to help people change ineffective patterns of behavior, such as self-harm, suicidal thinking and substance abuse, this approach is now applied much more widely to other reactive of impulsive behaviors as well (e.g. anger outburst, social withdrawal).

DBT therapy is most effective when individual DBT sessions occur in conjunction with a DBT Skills Group. Specific skills are taught during DBT Skills Groups that are referenced during individual DBT sessions. These skills are broken down into four modules: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance.

Treatment sessions are used to identify triggers that lead to reactive states and to determine which strategies will best increase emotional and cognitive regulation in response.

New Leaf Psychology Centre offers both individual DBT sessions and DBT Skills Groups. We have a skills group for adults, as well as a skills group for youth.
